ASSISTANT
COACH – MAGGIE ROE
Coach
Roe's pole vaulting experience began quite by chance. After eleven
years of gymnastics &
living two years away from home to train, she decided to give up the
sport and move back home.
She enrolled at Atascadero H.S. and was encouraged to try out for sports
there. Someone mentioned
pole vaulting and that there was a club in town... someone had pole vault
pits & a trampoline in his
backyard!! So in 1995, she was introduced to Jan Johnson, the 1972
Olympic Bronze medalist, and
joined his club, Sky Jumpers Vertical Sports Club. Coach Roe fit right
in, and Jan knew just how to
coach her. He gave her drills, and more drills, and by her senior year,
she had a PR of 11' 1" which
allowed her to compete in college. Her first year she attended Cal State
Northridge then transferred
to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where she ended her collegiate career
with a PR of 11' 6". Coach Roe
graduated form Cal Poly in 2003 with a degree in Kinesiology and became
an NATA Certified Athletic
trainer. She was hired immediately after college to be the first Athletic
Trainer at a new High School in
Nipomo, Ca. where she worked from 2002-2006. She also assisted in the
creation of their pole vault
program by advocating the needs of the athletes to the coaches and school
administration. While there,
she helped to get the necessary poles and equipment, as well as coached a group of
6 to 10 athletes.
In June 2006,she relocated to Las Vegas, after marrying her husband, Jason.
Coach Roe is currently a
"Stay at Home Mom" to her two step children, Taylor & Tori. She
feels privileged to have been a part
of the first group of women allowed to participate in the sport of pole
vaulting, where she got to practice and
compete next to some of the greatest. She recognizes how lucky she
was to be able to learn at a club
with good equipment, access to poles, and an amazing coach.
She hopes to be an advocate for the sport
and to help other athletes who want to participate in it safely.
